Big Run for Small Business! has reached its goal!!
12 days, 165 miles of roads, over 204.5 miles running on every street in Ottawa!
My name is Tom Aussem. I am the owner of Awesome Ottawa Tours, and my husband Coree Aussem-Woltering is a professional trail ultra runner. We were both born, raised, and continue to live in Ottawa, Illinois. When the COVID-19 virus and subsequent "social distancing" rules went into effect, we decided we had to do something to help our community.
Coree offered to run every street in Ottawa and Naplate to bring the community together, provide a diversion for the doom and gloom of the day and give something back to local small businesses, frontline healthcare workers, and those displaced by the virus. We also wanted to make it FUN so we added a bi-daily give-a-way with a value of $140 and a Grand Prize Drawing with over $400.
"Big Run for Small Business" was hatched!
Now that we've reached our goal, what happens next? First of all, you can still donate here or at any Financial Plus Credit Union location where an account has been set up under "Big Run for Small Business". But, as far as distribution goes, we've formed a committee of 6 people from Ottawa to help in the massive effort of purchasing over $10,000 in gift cards from local businesses. They are John Fisher-Dann, Jen & Greg Swanson, Mary Morris, Coree, and I. We will focus on companies forced to close or drastically scale back operations first, our beloved restaurants. We will do our best to expand beyond this industry based on need and funds available.
Next, the distribution of gift cards! We are working with Cherie Reynolds at OSF St. Elizebeth Hospital to distribute 60% of the gift cards to their frontline healthcare workers, as they see fit. The other 40% is distributed to owners and managers of small businesses affected by COVID-19 with an agreement to distribute them to their employees in need.
All gift card purchases and distribution will be completed no later than 30 days after the final deposit is made from GoFundME.
