BIPOC Book Project

Donation protected
The BIPOC Books Project was created by an informal collective in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. This project addresses the role of the American education system in opening conversations about race and inequality in our country. Specifically, this project aims to provide resources which will assist educators in this role.

We are raising funds to buy new books which we will donate to schools in an effort to offset budgetary limitations.

Criteria in selecting books:
- BIPOC authors
- Fiction & non-fiction narratives told from the perspective of BIPOC characters
- Topics/themes about race and culture in America

These criteria provide...
- Non-dominant narratives from BIPOC authors
- Representation for BIPOC students and their cultures
       - Affirmation of value to the beliefs and experiences of BIPOC students
- Awareness of current cultural issues
- Cross-cultural understandings and connections

The BIPOC Books Project was founded by:
- Mary Ellen Cuomo, a retired teacher who taught for over 40 years in Long Island
- Stephanie Cuomo, her daughter, who is a first year teacher in Philadelphia.
This informal collective has expanded with the addition of other Long Island residents seeking to be more actively involved. As a collective, we want to support schools to ensure that educators have the resources to foster discussions relevant to today’s world.

As Long Islanders ourselves, we are excited to kick off this project focusing first on local schools. Our first goal is to donate classroom book sets for educators at elementary, middle, and high school levels in the Glen Cove School District which serves over 3,000 total students from K-12. With students of color in the majority at 73%*, adding literature based on the selected criteria will support the district's mission to promote multicultural curriculum.

*NYSED Enrollment Data 2016-2017

The cost for each book ranges from $10 - $18. A classroom set is about 60 copies, therefore we set our goal at:

$3,000

We will be be accepting donations through this GoFundMe campaign

If we succeed in raising the funds and meet this initial goal, we hope to continue this work and donate to more school districts on Long Island and potentially expand even further.
