Bring Dr. John F Stevenson's Sword home
We are raising money to help bring Dr. John F. Stevenson's sword home. Dr. Stevenson was born in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada. After attending Harvard Medical school, he offered his services during the Civil War to the United States Medical Corp and was assigned as Surgeon with the 29th Connecticut Infantry. The 29th was one of the many units where the rank and file were free black men who had volunteered to defend the Union after the Emancipation Proclamation. Dr Stevenson died in service and his remains are buried in St Andrews, New Brunswick. The NEW BRUNSWICK HISTORICAL SOCIETY will be the beneficiary of this important artifact and any donation will help bring the Doctor’s personal sword back to his home province. The NBHS manages the Loyalist House Museum, a residence that was built by the Merritt family in 1812 in Saint John, New Brunswick. One of the family members who grew up in this house, Dr. David Merritt, was also a Surgeon during the American Civil War. Although thousands of men from Canada’s Maritime provinces served in the U.S. Civil War, there are few artefacts on public display to highlight this chapter of history. This sword has great significance to the history of New Brunswick and deserves a home here. This sword, if we are successful, will be made available for loan to other museums and Historical sites in the Province of New Brunswick. Our final goal is to raise $7000 to acquire the sword and to construct a secure display case. I personally wish to thank you in advance for your contribution to this worthwhile cause.
