Cheri's Choice: Protect single mother rights
Donation protected
I need your help protecting the liberties of single mothers and preserving a woman's right to have a child on her own through IVF.
Here's my story:
In 2012, I separated from my husband. We have a daughter together. We suffered the death of two other children during the marriage.
I filed a petition for divorce in 2013. My estranged husband contested the divorce and we are still legally married to this day.
In 2014, I wanted to have another child. I told my "ex" that I intended to become pregnant through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) using an anonymous sperm donor. He did not object, and we agreed that he would have no legal responsibility for the child.
I gave birth to my son in May 2015. My estranged husband filed legal documents in 2016 to declare that he was not the father. My ex is not the biological father, has never been in a fatherly role, has never lived with the child, and never paid child support. In 2016, my ex filed papers with the court confirming that he is not my son's legal father.
Then, 37 months later, he changed his mind and is suing me to gain parental rights over my son against my will.
I have paid over $100,000 in legal fees defending my family's right to choose. As I said, I need your help protecting the liberties of single mothers and preserving a woman's right to have a child on her own through IVF.
I believe it's important to create meaning out of suffering. I've created a non-profit so I can share my experience and help other women navigate their path to motherhood. I hope you'll support me in this mission. I'm also committed to getting our laws changed to be more accepting of single mothers and tolerant of different family models.
