CORONAVIRUS DONATIONS TO THOSE IN NEED

What is COVID-19? At the end of 2019, Chinese officials confirmed a new strain of Coronavirus, called COVID-19, after several cases of respiratory problems were reported.

Should I be worried? COVID-19 has no cure. The virus has spread quickly worldwide resulting in numerous deaths, as well as the lock-down of many countries. Due to limited space in hospitals, many are resorting to self isolation as the virus is quick to spread to person to person. According to the World Health Organisation, 80% of those affected recover without needing any specialist treatment. Although the percentage is a high number, we cannot risk being in the 20% of those that suffer substantially more and have a higher risk of fatal consequences.

What are the symptoms? The severity of symptoms vary from person to person from having no symptoms at all to having fever, cough, fatigue, general weakness, sore throat and muscular pain. The more severe cases show symptoms of pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis and septic shock; unfortunately these conditions can all lead to death. Recent tests show that anosmia may develop -- loss of smell and in some cases loss of taste.

How can I prevent myself from getting infected? The virus can enter your body through your nose, eyes and mouth so it is extremely important to stop touching your face with unwashed hands. Ensure your hands are clean by washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. It is also recommended to stay 2 metres away from everyone, excluding the people you live with. Only leave the house when it is essential, such as going food shopping, going to work (only if you cannot work from home), or if you need to pick up medicines or attend a doctors appointment. Stay indoors as much as you can!

Why should I donate? Donations are required now more than ever. Many hospitals require more money to spend on medical equipment, testing kits, face masks and more space to new COVID-19 patients. This is why I have chosen to raise funds for the Heart to Heart International (HHI) as they have now launched international, domestic and local responses to COVID-19.  HHI are deploying mobile medical units to local communities to support those with housing instabilities and are also distributing hygiene kits for those in quarantine or unable to leave their homes. However, personal protection supplies -- masks, gowns and hand sanitisers -- are limited globally, the funds could really help not only the local communities but people worldwide receive these supplies.

The other charity I have chosen is Medical Teams International who are hoping to overcome many of the challenges being seen today. One of these challenges has been to overcome the overwhelming number of patients in hospital by re-purposing mobile dental vans to have them as support centres for drive-thru COVID-19 screening sites. As of today, the funds they have received has helped them to screen 250 people.

Please consider donating even if it's £1, $1, or even a few pennies. The funds could help people all over the world and if everyone seeing this gofundme donated, we could raise a large amount of funds which could make an enormous difference.
