Flood Appeal - Legacy Clydesdales

Donation protected
Storm Dennis has hit us hard at Legacy Clydesdales, our fields are waist deep in water, our yard is 2 foot under water, including our stables and feed room.

We have lost pallets of bedding and our winter hay supply, along with all of the horses feed.

The horses are trapped in their field on a small patch of higher ground, but fortunately they are ok, all be it a little cold, wet and rather disgruntled that they can't come in.

Our chickens have had to be rescued as their coops went underwater.  We creatively sailed them to safety in cat baskets on an airbed!

This is the second time we have been hit by major flooding this winter (the first was on 15th October)and the 9th time we have had minor flooding (the stables avoid the water but our field goes under).  This has all been caused by a tiny dyke couple of fields over that usually has about 6 inches of water in the bottom.  Last year the ditches around our fields were dry.  Today, as in October,  the water from the river half a mile away is pushing back through the water course and has forced the water onto our land.

The local farmer said it flooded once about 20 years ago.  For it to have done it twice in 4 months, plus the 7 other minor floods has never happened in living memory.  It really could not have been predicted.

Last night when we left the dyke had at least 4 foot to go before it would breach.  By the time we returned we were three foot under with the water levels still rising.

We have lost so much and just can not afford to replace it.   Between the two major flooding incidents and the 7 smaller breaches we have lost the following:

Winter hay supply x 2 (we replenished after the flood in October)

Bedding - 4 pallets (in October we had used a pallet to bed down, the beds were washed away, a further pallet was lost to the water.  We have again lost a pallets worth of bedding and a further pallet is lost to the water)

Feed - all our feed bins are full of water, this is the second time we have lost our feed (HiFi chaff x 2, Nuts x 12, linseed meal x 4, stud balancer x2, speedibeet x4, wheat feed x 6, garlic x 5kg, bucket of treats, mixed corn x6, layers pellets x6)

Rugs - boxes of rugs saturated 8 rugs to be washed and reproofed each time.

Electric fence unit and batteries  x3

Show prep items - 25kg wood flour, 5kg soapflake, 10kg chalk

Grooming kits x 2

Our lorry - this was damaged in the floods in October and, as we were unable to move it due to it getting stuck on soft ground, we had to leave it in situ.  There has been extensive damage caused, attributed to the repeat flooding (it got wet every time), this was only discovered when we were able to get it out after a few dry weeks in early February.  The insurance will not cover the cost of a replacement as it was not moved after the first flooding incident, even though we were unable to get it out - we tried!   Due to the layout of our driveway, an s-bend over a bridge, we could not be towed the full length of the drive and had to wait for the ground to be dry enough to negotiate this hazard. Even after it had dried out we still got stuck and had to be towed.

In total we have lost well over £10 000 of items and simply don't know how we are going to find the money to replace more.

We are now in a position that we urgently need your help so we can buy replacement hay, bedding and feed for the horses, get rugs washed and reproofed for them and replace the consumable items we need for their day to day care.  We desperately need support to be able to recover from the devastation these floods have caused.

We know that every penny counts and are incredibly grateful to everyone who feels they can donate to help us get back on our feet, however small a donation it is greatly appreciated by us and the animals.

For larger donations we would like to give something back:

Donate £50 and receive a beautiful clydesdale horseshoe, as worn by Harrison (there are limited numbers of these available - we will let you know when they have gone)

Donate £100 and receive a clydesdale experience day for 2 people, get up close and personal with Harrison and Clementine, spend time grooming them, learn how to braid and show them, take them for a walk, the choices are endless.

Donate £250 and receive a two hourcarriage drive for up to three people with our beautiful Chester around the local lanes and villages.  If you want we will even wait outside the pub while you enjoy lunch or a pint.

Donate £500 and receive a Legacy Clydesdales Show experience.  As soon as we are able to afford a new lorry (we don't know when this will be but however long it takes we will hold this offer open) you will be invited to a two day show experience.  Join us on day one for bathing and preparation of Harrison and Clementine.  Day two, become part of the show team, join us at a show, help prepare the horses for the ring, join us in the grand parade and, where there is the opportunity AND it is safe to do so, we would even support you to enter a novice handler class.

Thank you so very much for your support.

Helen, Harrison, Clementine, Chester and all of the Legacy Clydesdales Team.
