Future for Rain
Donation protected
Let’s give a queer Native youth the future she deserves!
Over the past year, dear Rain has lost both her parents at only age 15. At a time when she should be exploring herself and the world with joy and curiosity, she’s been left heartbroken and with an uncertain future. While she certainly has a family who are willing to care for her, their resources are tight and extremely limited, especially in this era of the pandemic when jobs have become even more scarce and dangerous. With both of her parents gone, Rain and her remaining family needs a little bit of a boost!
Your donations will go towards a new family car (so they can actually drive and get groceries), school supplies and materials, healthy food (which is difficult to get in Grande Prairie), clean water, support for extracurricular activities (she wants to start training martial arts), and of course a college fund so Rain can achieve any and all of her dreams.
Rain had already lost her mother on St. Patrick’s Day 2019, a victim of the ongoing opioid epidemic perpetuated by the ongoing colonial violence of the Canadian state against the Dene Sioux.
Then, in the summer of 2019, Rain’s father was diagnosed with leukemia. Fearing the worst but hoping for the best, he was rushed to Edmonton Hospital to receive care. Over the past year, thanks to a successful marrow transplant, he was in steady recovery and it looked like he would be able to continue to provide for Rain well into her adult years. Then, earlier this month, he was abruptly sickened with herpes viral encephalitis. After spending 5 days in a coma, he passed in the arms of his daughter at 4:15am on July 16th.
Rain is an incredibly sweet and precious teenager of the Dene Sioux people. She loves watching anime with her friends and hanging out with her older sisters. Last year she came out as queer to her family which was incredibly cute and exciting.
We want to do everything we can to provide the best life for Rain. Because she is underage, all funds will be going to her sister, Kelsey Bertin, who will see that funds go towards the best possible resources to help Rain grow up. (This campaign is being organized/run by Kelsey's fiance, Rebecca Hoekstra, with the family's permission, in order to allow the family space to grieve.)
Please help us by donating or sharing today!
Thank you.
FYI - There was a problem with the other fundraiser because it was made with the US version of GoFundMe. Please use this one instead!
