Golden Ghosts Virtual Theater

Donation protected

We are raising money because of the Covid pandemic and the shutting down of our live performances. We are a small local community group in far Northern California with the goal of telling the unknown/untold story of African Americans in the beginnings of California. The history that was left out of history books, the history that is part of the 400 years of inequality. Please watch our videos at www.goldenghosts.org and if you can share a donation with us to keep our work going. Thank You

In the mountains of Northern California, in Shasta and Siskiyou Counties, one of the largest gold mining events took place in the 19th century. Within a few years of the discovery of gold, miners  arrived from all corners of the globe. By 1853, over 3,000 African American men were in the California gold fields. Today, little is ever mentioned about the free and enslaved black men and women who lived in the northern California wilderness by pick and shovel.

Through the lens of contemporary storytelling, theater, music and video we will reconstruct the lives of these first African Americans. Through collaboration with history professionals, local artists, and performers we will work with the African American communities in Shasta and Siskiyou Counties to tell the story of migration and life in these remote mines. This project will foremost provide opportunities for members of the African American community to finally assert their story.
