Hate Crime Support Fund
From Monday, February 15th to Monday, February 22nd, 2021, WE Trans Support’s Community Centre location at 1435 Tecumseh Rd. E has been targeted for 3 separate hate crimes of vandalism and destruction of property.
On Monday, February 15th, our Executive Director, Alex Reid noticed homophobic slurs and swastikas on our front windows.
On Saturday, February 20th, more swastikas, homophobic slurs, racial slurs, and anti-police statements were written on the windows again.
Today, Monday, February 22nd, it has escalated to swastikas, vulgar language, and a rusted brake rotor from a vehicle which was thrown through the front window, shattering the glass, damaging our new floors, and spreading glass across our professional services area.
At WE Trans Support, we loudly speak out against transphobic, homophobic, racist, sexist, misogynistic, islamophobic, ableist, and bigoted hate speech, violence, and hate crimes. We will not back down in the face of these acts of hatred and we will not let it stop us from the important work we do to support the health and wellness of our queer and trans community members, our families, friends, and allies.
To our community members, clients, and allies, we support you and we’re here for you during this time of fear, injustice, uncertainty, and violence. Please reach out if you need any support or a listening ear during this time. To the greater community, community partners, media, and fellow LGBTQIA2S support networks, please consider this a call to stand in solidarity with us against the hatred that is targeted to ALL of our community, not just WE Trans Support.
Damage from these acts of violence will total thousands of dollars in window replacement, floor repairs, and shatter-proof glass. We have started a GoFundMe to help support the funds for these repairs and for anyone looking to support the work we do during this time.
Thank you so much in advance for your support,
Alexander Reid,
Executive Director
