ABOUT US AND OUR MISSION:
As a new nonprofit organization Bodies in Action ~ enGendering Contemporary Dance a company based in East London (Tower Hamlets) that aims to stand and encourage every individual to live in their authentic skin without succumbing to the societal pressures of conformity. We aim to close the gap of conventional gender roles in contemporary dance by welcoming and involving individuals who lie on the gender spectrum on a recreational and professional level through classes/workshops, outreach programs, and performance.
We believe it is vital to reduce the stigma of people who identify differently than the majority by incorporating and bringing them to the forefront of the community through forms of activism and exposure. We believe that contemporary dance/exercise is a form of physical and mental therapy and we aim to be the leading cause of change in the industry by engaging this audience through different opportunities on both a recreational and professional level.
Our main mission is to introduce and include individuals on the gender spectrum (specifically queer, intersex, transgender, and non-binary) to contemporary dance (recreationally & professionally) and get them more involved in the contemporary dance community.
Becoming an integral part of our cause can help change the way the contemporary dance industry is perceived by ultimately everyone. With your generous donation we can:
- Challenge Social perspectives on Gender and identity through our work with Professional Artists and the wider community.
- Create exciting Jobs & Opportunities in the Arts, promoting and practicing inclusivity in all our work.
- Create groundbreaking new work whilst nurturing professional development
- Seek out collaborations with individuals who lie on the gender spectrum and provide a platform for these voices to be heard.
- Highlight the power of dance and movement in everyday life and its contribution to physical and mental health.
- Generate a grassroots platform to inspire social change through our interactions with young people & communities.
Recently, Bodies in Action ~ enGendering Contemporary Dance has been creating work that challenges contemporary dance and we hope to continue to do so. We aim to raise these amounts of funds because we want to continue to create social change by hosting classes, workshops, discussions, and performances by integrating the community in need.
WHAT THE FUNDS WILL BE USED FOR:
Recently, we have been given a space to host our first workshop/performance throughout a week in mid-July. Throughout this week, we will be hosting classes and workshops that benefit the entire gender spectrum community alongside more gender-specific classes leading up to three days of performances.
What one of these days may look like:
Pro Contemporary Morning Class: A place where professionals or pre-professionals can come take a class at ease to rediscover, improve upon, or heighten movement skills or technique. During these classes, we encourage a "free to be you and me" attitude so there is continuously a sense of inclusivity.
Workshop: A space where individuals can practice learning new contemporary phrase work in a welcoming, encouraging, and non-judgmental setting.
General Movement Class: A guided movement session exclusively for people who have never experienced dance who identify as Queer, Intersex, Transgender, or Non-Binary.
Organised Discussion: A place where individuals of all gender identities are free to come in and join a discussion about how we can continue to create change throughout the contemporary dance industry and reshape it to fit everyone's needs.
Performance: Through performance, we will be able to share new works by emerging and professional choreographers to share with an audience. This will be beneficial as we will continue to expose new audiences to what contemporary dance is and what it can become.
We believe that £5,500 will give us the necessary foundation in order to build our organisation efficiently and give the availability to create change. Initially, we want to encourage people to become more involved so if we hit the target, we will offer our services FREE OF CHARGE while paying our artists/leaders/and performers. We will use these funds to create events in order to expose ourselves as a organisation to our audience.
WHEN:
We plan on hitting our target by mid-June in order to start planning for our first workshop in late July. If the current situation with the pandemic does not allow us to explore this option, as soon as it is safe for everyone, we will proceed.
Any form of support, whether it be just £1 would change the world and we could become that much closer to achieving our goal. Please consider donating so we can continue to create social change, introduce individuals to contemporary dance, and support the performing arts.
We want to thank you for your time in reading our statement and what we plan to do in order to create social change through contemporary dance.
Sincerely,
The Bodies in Action Team.
