Many of you may know my husband, John Schnetter—also known as “Yosemite,” the smiling cowboy and gunfighter in Oatman, Arizona. I’m Nancy, and John and I just celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary. For over 21 years, John has brought joy to countless families and tourists by performing gunfights in the heart of Route 66. He’s been a dedicated part of the community, helping raise tens of thousands of dollars for Shriners Children’s Hospital, and serving as a beloved judge for Oatman’s annual bed races and egg fry. John’s kindness and happiness have touched so many, and he still receives postcards, letters, and small gifts from visitors who remember him as the cowboy who always had a smile for everyone. He is deeply grateful for the chance to bring happiness to others and cherishes every connection he’s made along the way.

Earlier this year, John faced a series of serious health challenges. After being airlifted to Las Vegas, doctors discovered multiple blood clots and blockages. He’s had to undergo five major surgeries, and to save his life, his leg was amputated above the knee. It’s been just over two months since the amputation, and while we are learning to adapt, the journey has been overwhelming at times. We’ve discovered that prosthetics are extremely expensive, and because we live in Arizona but his medical care is in Nevada, insurance will only cover part of the cost. We are responsible for 20% of the cost for the prosthetic leg John needs, which is far more than we can afford on our own.
