Help Sam Rebuild Her Life Post Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury

Donation protected
On Easter Sunday 2023, our beloved Sam sustained a life-changing spinal cord injury whilst riding her horse. This tragic accident resulted in immediate paralysis from her shoulders down. She was airlifted to hospital where she spent 6 hours in resus and was admitted to ICU with what the doctors described as a ‘catastrophic injury’. Sam then spent 3 months immobilised in a neck brace before continuing her journey to a specialist spinal rehabilitation unit to attempt to find any semblance of normality.

Sam's Journey and the Road Ahead
Sam's recovery potential is directly impacted by her ability to access specialised neuro-physiotherapy. Unfortunately, as with many other services the NHS does not provide ongoing specialist physiotherapy for patients like Sam with severe spinal cord injuries in the community, nor do they offer psychological support which is why we desperately need your help.
Spinal cord injuries are complex, and life-altering and Sam’s injury is no different. She sustained acute fractures of the vertebrae in her neck, along with damage to her spinal cord. As a result, Sam is tetraplegic. This means all 4 limbs are impacted by her injury, leaving her a permanent wheelchair/power-chair user. She has altered sensation and impacted movement from her chest down with very limited hand function, as a result she requires full-time care to help with normal day to day tasks.
Additionally, Sam is at risk of Autonomic Dysreflexia (AD), this is an awful side effect of spinal cord injuries and a potentially life-threatening condition. However, we do know that Sam’s injury is classed as ‘incomplete’ this means there is a possibility for continued recovery, and we also know that specialist physiotherapy can reduce the chances of having an AD episode as well as helping combat long term health issues such as poor organ function and brittle bones
Now is the optimal time for Sam to regain as much independence as possible, which is vital for her future.

Sam's Story
Before her accident, Sam was a creative. She loved to draw and paint, this was her vocation and an innate talent. She led a full and active life, walking her dogs and riding her horse were her favourite things to do- all of which have been taken away from her. We have experienced the best and worst of the healthcare system, and now we want to ensure that Sam has the opportunity to live the vibrant, fulfilling life she deserves. With your help, we can make this possible.

Why We Need Your Support
We are seeking to raise £14,000 to cover 12 months of specialist private physiotherapy and psychological support for Sam. This may seem like a significant sum, but it is essential for her to access the specialised care and equipment she needs.

Your generous donation will fund:
• Specialised physiotherapy to help Sam regain movement and strength and learn to do ‘normal’ day to day activities to help her lead a more fulfilling life
• Psychological support to aid her mental health and well-being.
• Necessary equipment and care to ensure her safety and comfort.

We are reaching out to our community and beyond to help Sam on her journey to recovery. Every donation, no matter how small, brings us closer to our goal and gives Sam the chance to regain her independence and live life to the fullest.

Thank you for your kindness and support.
