On the evening of Friday 30 September, my wife Sarah was involved in a tragic accident on the London Underground.
She was coming back from work, and it was raining. She lost her footing and ended up falling down the gap between the platform and the train, onto the tracks. Nobody saw her. The train departed and another came, during this she suffered serious injuries with tragic consequences.
The accident means Sarah now needs a prosthetic right arm and leg.
But she is determined that the accident will not stop her from continuing her life as it was before the accident.
Sarah and I, as well as our two young children are asking for as many people as possible to help her to do that.
The National Health Service here in the UK are doing the most incredible job of helping her get back to her normal life but while there are options for below the knee prosthetics, the arm is a lot more complicated.
Above the elbow prosthetics are very limited. And waiting lists are very lengthy. To get a decent functioning arm we’d have to fund it privately.
Science and medicine have made some amazing progress in recent years, and we’ve been told that right now there’s a bionic prosthetic arm out there that’s as close to having the arm that she lost.
But having that arm comes with a cost and that cost is £250,000. It includes the high tech bionic hardware, the highly-complex surgery to connect it to her body, and follow-up specialised rehabilitation.
Sarah wishes to go home to be with our family. She can’t wait to be there for our two young daughters. She misses being with us. When the time is right, she wants to return to work and do what she loves. She wants to actively contribute to our society. She wants to be helpful. She wants to be useful. Having a well-designed prosthetic arm and leg will help her achieve that.
So, she relies on your generosity and support - in whatever way - to help her return to a normal life.
