My name is Michael Forbes and I currently serve as the President of the Jamaica Prefects’ Association, as well as Deputy Head Boy of Glenmuir High School in May Pen, Jamaica. Also, I have served as a delegate to the WFUNA International Model United Nations New York 2019.

Other cocurricular activities I’ve served in include President of both my school’s United Nations Club and Debate Society, Public Relations Officer for both the Red Cross Society and Quiz Club, as well as House Captain, Academic Mentor, Youth Assisting Youth Mentor, Science Club Member and Class Monitor for five years in a row. In 2019, I was graciously awarded the Most Responsible and Trustworthy Student of the Year.

In my recent academic pursuits, I have copped 16 high quality subject passes in the regional CXC examinations, 11 grade ones in CSEC and 4 grade ones and a two in CAPE. Among these, I topped my examination class in CSEC Chemistry and ranked in the top ten of the Jamaica Merit List for CAPE Caribbean Studies.

 

Despite the chaos the world currently faces, I stand steadfast to carry on my blazing academic excellence in this year’s CAPE examinations, as I look to rightly cap off my high school career. I aspire to then start my tertiary studies at one of Canada’s leading universities, York University, where I was recently admitted.

I have an ineffable care for the welfare of others, as well as an immense love for the sciences both n

 

atural and social. As such I intend to combine both passions to pursue a career in psychiatry. As a psychiatrist, I plan to bring more attention to the oft overlooked issue of mental health, as I do my part in maintaining the mental and social wellbeing of my community, both near and at large.

Consequently, I intend to complete a double major in Biology and Psychology within the next four years. I am beyond honoured to be given the opportunity to chase my dreams, however my heart aches when I consider the funds to finance such a dream are not readily apparent. Despite this, my hope and faith persist.
Based on the calculations from the York University Office of Financial Services, the total budgeted costs for the Academic Year 2020-2021 is CAD$45,575.90 (USD$32,305.35). This figure is broken down into the following categories:

Tuition: CAD$28,632.90 (USD$20,295.08)

Books/Personal Expenses: CAD$5,350.00 (USD$3,792.21)

Residence/Meals: CAD$10,957.00 (USD$7,766.60)

Health Care: CAD$636.00 (USD$450.81)
Gratefully, I have been awarded a scholarship of CAD$10,000 by the York University International Scholarship Committee to go towards my first-year expenses.
Notwithstanding, I am graciously seeking financial assistance to acquire the remaining balance of CAD$35,575.90 (USD$25,217.09).

It is however pertinent to add that although the aforementioned costs were stipulated by the York University Office of Financial Services, they are approximations and are subject to change, especially given the current global situation.

I anticipate departure in mid to late August to participate in orientation then commence classes in early September. 

Being from  a struggling household where the sole income comes from a sickly parent, I understand the humble virtue of overcoming trials and tribulations in making the best of any opportunity received.
