Help The Bryan Project go to the Lacuna Festival!

My name is Katie Butler and I am an artist, educator and Bryanite... Kind of. I was born in Bryan, Ohio in 1988. My dad worked for ARO, my mom worked for a nursing home in Montpelier. We lived in a house on County Road 13. In 1991 we moved to Texas and I never came back.

30 years later, I became curious about this place and I ventured out to discover my roots. What began as an exploration into my own brief personal history with Bryan, Ohio, The Bryan Project has blossomed into a community-driven documentary piece inviting the entire city to engage in conversation and art around questions surrounding small-town economy, the intersection of art and commerce, and how we as artists can band together to imagine a new future for Bryan.

I knew I had to document this journey and exploration, and I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to share this experience with the world July 1st at the Lacuna Festival!Since October, 2020, I have taken two trips out to Bryan, met some incredible people and made some lifelong friends. This experience will culminate into a documentary piece, reflecting the art and culture of a special town finding its way in the midst of a rapidly changing world.

I believe this is the beginning of a years-long project, one that I undertake as a labor of love. As an emerging artist, I am funding these journeys out of my own pocket, acting as director, producer, videographer, interviewer, location scout, and editor. I am reducing hours at my day job to give this project all of the attention that I can. I keep going because I believe in this work, I believe in this community and I believe that I can play a small part in helping Bryan, Ohio thrive. But I cannot keep doing this alone. I need help.

At every turn, when I wanted to give up on this project, throw my hands in the air and declare it impossible, I've had friends, family, and serendipity pulling me back and keeping me going. I find myself, again, in one of these places. While I am passionate and committed, editing a documentary takes a trained and skillful eye. I want this piece to be the best that it can be, and to do that I need someone with experience and dedication to take this with me to the finish line--and that person needs to be paid.

So today, I'm asking again for a little help from my friends. The bulk of these donations will go toward hiring an editor and post-production costs, approximately $1k. The other $500 will help me cover some of the expenses that I incurred from traveling and lodging in Bryan, and the Zoom account I purchased so I could conduct virtual interviews when travel wasn't possible. $500 won't cover all of the costs, and certainly won't make me a profit, but it will ease the burden while I work on putting this piece together.

Help me tell this story, and help this town and so many like it get the recognition they deserve. It takes a village, and I want you to be a part of mine. Give a little, give a lot. Share on social media, tell your friends. Enjoy me wearing a diaper on my head with the hippest dad around. Love you all.

Love,
Katie (Diaperhead)
