Hello, friends, family, and kind strangers,
My name is Oscar Liberato (with my wife Lisa by my side), and I'm a medically retired U.S. Army veteran who served from 2004 to 2011, including multiple deployments to Iraq. During my service, I was severely wounded: 70% burns across my body, complete loss of use of my right dominant hand, extensive scarring, and facial disfigurement. These injuries led to my medical retirement and a 100% service-connected VA disability rating. I've fought hard to build a stable life for my family—my wonderful wife Lisa and our seven beautiful children—but right now, we're facing our toughest battle yet: our home in Lynden, Washington, is severely contaminated with toxic mold, and it's uninhabitable.
What started as bathroom fan exhaust pipe disconnected has turned into widespread hidden mold that spread after a previous remediation failed. The only way to know the full extent and ensure it's completely gone is to open up all the walls, ceilings, and affected areas for visual inspection. That means full gutting: removing and replacing insulation, drywall, fully replacing the roof (correcting moisture sources, upgrading ventilation, and rebuilding safely. Mold spores are everywhere, and with my burn scars, skin sensitivities, and respiratory vulnerabilities. This is a direct threat to my health. It's even more dangerous for our kids which is why I’m doing this—our family of nine can't live here until it's fixed. We're displaced right now, living in temporary arrangements that are straining us emotionally and financially.
We've exhausted every option: insurance won't cover it at all, and with my income and current situation we simply don't have the savings for a project this massive. The true costs are unknown until professionals open everything up, but we're looking at tens of thousands for safe, thorough remediation and repairs. Every dollar raised will go directly toward:
- Roof replacement and structural fixes
- Full gutting, mold removal, and rebuilding (insulation, drywall, etc.)
We're not asking for handouts, we're asking for help to reclaim the safe home our family deserves after years of sacrifice. Your support, no matter how small, will make a huge difference: sharing this page, donating what you can, or even just sending words of encouragement and prayer means the world. We've attached photos of the visible damage (and will add more updates as work progresses).
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for reading our story. Your generosity could bring our family back together under one safe roof. God bless our veterans, our families, and everyone who steps up for those in need.
With deepest gratitude,
Oscar & Lisa Liberato
Lynden, WA
