I AM NOT A STUNTMAN…..THIS IS FOR REAL!!

October 2021

My name is Laurence Mitchell and I am 68 years of age. I was diagnosed at the age of 49 in 2002 with Aspergers Syndrome, Motor Challenges & Adult ADHD. I have also survived personal traumas and tragedies by having a positive view of life.

I've always had a different outlook on the world from Neuro-Typical people. I am a strong believer in the importance of the great outdoors to our wellbeing and quality of life. My chosen charity to fundraise for this year is Greenpeace. Next year I will support mental health and homelessness charities.

My fund raising event takes place this month weather permitting 2021. I am climbing the American Beech Tree 100 times.  A sample of the climb which takes place in local woods is illustrated in the above time-lapse video.  My challenge takes place shortly before the Glasgow Climate Change Conference https://ukcop26.org/uk-presidency/what-is-a-cop/

I will be making the climb without any harnesses ropes- in other words "Soloing". While the fundraising purpose is to support the  environment my climb is to highlight the preservation of trees; so essential to the survival of all living things. Forest bathing is also an aid for those who struggle with their mental health.

I believe that age is just a number-that we are capable of great feats of strength regardless of how old we are. Climbing trees does not have to be just for children!

My tree climbing marathon is also to prove that trees while challenging are not necessarily dangerous to climb without safety equipment so long as you have the right knowledge.

How I got into tree climbing and why I am so strong

In the spring of 2019  I was on a photo shoot in Victoria Park North London where I climbed up my first tree without any difficulty. I became hooked on the idea that tree climbing offers a unique workout replacing other forms of exercise. My coordination, balance, dexterity, flexibility and all round muscle strength have improved immensely.  Tree climbing isn't just about being able to climb to the top of the tree as many exercises and stretches can be performed closer to the ground.

Soon I was regularly climbing half a dozen trees.  During lockdown I sought out more to climb. By January 2021 I had climbed 150 different trees. I then decided the American Beech was the idea tree to complete my marathon.

I have been keeping a pictorial journal of my tree climbing challenge which includes informative images and videos that I intend to publish in 2023.

My tree climbing challenge is an act of dedication not just on a personal level but to persuade anyone who cares about the environment to join me in supporting Greenpeace.

I look forward to your support.
