Hey there internet,
My name is I’Nasah Crockett. I'm an artist, writer, independent researcher and curator, and a semi-professional loudmouth. I'm launching this campaign to help my get my health the freak together.
If you've been a reader/follower of mine for a while, you might remember that I started having issues with my teeth in 2019. I found a Groupon for the services of a local dentist, who examined me and recommended a deep cleaning. I was able to get half of the procedure done, but I opted not to finish after not seeing any improvement. This year, I was able to get an examination from a different dentist, and it turns out I have advanced periodontitis, which was not mentioned to me at any point by the previous provider. What this means for me on a day-to-day basis is that I am experiencing pain, shifting teeth, and heightened risk of infection. If the periodontitis is left untreated, I'll eventually lose my teeth.
I received a referral to a dental center, under the impression that I would be able to reasonably finance such necessary care. It turns out that the procedure in total is $8300, with half that amount due before I even sat in the dentist’s chair. to begin my treatment. There’s no way I can pay this amount out of pocket directly, and even with insurance — which I do not have — my deductible would be beyond my means. Other financial aid options aren’t feasible on such short notice. As time passes, my teeth are steadily deteriorating. Aside from tooth loss, untreated periodontitis can make a person very sick, which I do not want for myself during a whole entire pandemic.
On top of this slow moving medical emergency, I recently experienced an acute medical emergency. I was rushed to the ER with excruciating abdominal pain, which turned out to be a 6cm ovarian cyst. The doctors who helped me informed me that I required immediate surgery. While I'm recovering nicely and am working out a payment plan with the hospital, more medical debt is adding to my general need for support at this time.
I need to raise $15,000 to cover the dental procedure itself, the associated costs during the 4-week recovery period, and the costs of my recent ER trip. I have waited and agonized about launching this campaign. At this critical point, I can no longer wait. I am thankful in advance for all support sent my way.
