3D CONTRO L'EMERGENZA | 3D AGAINST THE EMERGENCY

English version at the bottom of the page

E allora ci siamo chiesti: “Che cosa manca?

E allora tocca a noi, e a voi.

E’ il momento di insegnare a pescare.

Grazie

SVI - Servizio Volontario Internazionale
MMI - Medicus Mundi Italia
SCAIP - Servizio Collaborazione Internazionale Piamartina Onlus

Materiale sanitario d’emergenza: mascherine chirurgiche, guanti

ENGLISH VERSION

Give a man a fish and you will feed it for a day. Teach him to fish and you will feed him for life.
Our project to modify snorkeling masks went well, and we really hope to have given a hand, but then we realized one thing: somewhere in the world, it's always an emergency. We started from this famous proverb and we said to ourselves: does it make sense to keep sending pieces? What if they need more? We have to do more, we have to send printers directly and teach them to use them! And this is a new adventure.

One day a coach said: "It's not the load that breaks you down, it's the way you carry it.” (Lou Holtz).

He was right, and that is true for every kind of game. We're playing the most important match of our life:  we made the Venturi valve, and we constructed the Charlotte valve for emergency breathing mask. This have caused to receive compliments from everywhere, and allowed us to feel the joy to have contributed, in our own small way, doing our part.

In spite of that, we were left with an annoying feeling of incompleteness.

It's a bit like being ahead at the end of the first half: you scored a point, but you are not satisfied. You know the game isn't over and isn’t won, and you still have to fight.

And then we asked ourselves, "What's missing? Why do we feel this annoying sense of emptiness?"

These thoughts have become more and more insistent because every day we are receiving messages from all over the world,  in particular in countries where the 3d printing network is not such developed.

Countries where the distribution of biomedical products is limited by economic shortages, lack of supply, lack of personnel. Countries where roads make a few kilometers trasport an endless obstacle course.

They requested us the Venturi valves, the Charlotte valves, the Dave valves: even in these countries people need them to breathe when there are no official products left and, in addition to these component, the rest is also missing: PPE devices, gloves, other materials.  Satisfying these requests means to collect the needs, print the components and ship them; in other words a huge job, impossible to face in a fast way. To put it in the coach's words: “ A load too heavy, that could bring us down”. And right now we can't afford it.

But then we figured it out. We understood that we have to face the urgency by changing our perspective: we don't want to send the pieces anymore, no!

We want to ship 3D printers and materials for on-site production.

Confucius said: "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."

That's what we want to do: teach to fish.

To do it we need to carry on different project: we need to ship the printers where it is needed, and it must be realized a network, a platform of exchange and help: we have requests, we have makers available to give their competence, we have contacts.

We can roll up our sleeves and create the structure, the platform to put all the protagonists in contact: 3D printers in needy areas, already experienced makers who give support, doctors or other figures who provide their contribution.

But it's not enough.

We need money. Money buys the printers that we are going to ship, support equipment and pays the professionals who work on the logistics and development of the platform.

We need someone to help us create video tutorials to teach less fortunate brothers how to use printers, what their potential is and what are their limitations.

We need makers who are available for tutoring beneficiaries.

We need you. They need you.

And not just today. Because, even if the game of poverty is never won, we must not give up playing it.

Let us think of a tomorrow where this emergency will be finished, but we know in other parts of the world emergency continues everyday: let we think about a school that a day will break a pipe, a hospital will need an hard to find equipment, a local company will break a piece of machinery and it will be necessary to find a spare part. Imagine at that point that our community of technicians, makers and engineers could analyze the problem and, if the missing part can be replaced with a 3D part, could provide the file through the platform,

so that it can be produced directly in the area where it is to be used.

We like to think of a piece of a refrigerator that breaks down and is replaced shortly. We like to think about a poor school, which at Christmas can print a small gift, a game, to give it to children who have nothing. In our country, it's easy: just say the magic words "assistance", "buy" and someone will run to repair the damage, someone will deliver the gift. In some countries the word is another: "Hope". And often it is not enough.

Then it's up to us, and you.

It's time to teach fishing.

Thank you

* What's the project? *

With a view to transparency, we have decided not to send your donations to our bank account, but to lean on the support of various Onlus and associations:

SVI - International Voluntary Service
MMI - Medicus Mundi Italy
SCAIP - Piamartina Onlus International Support Collaboration Service
Diocesan CARITAS of Brescia
Missions Office - Diocese of Brescia
As a further guarantee, a monitoring committee will also be set up to oversee the use of all funds.

We foresee two phases:

Step 1 - Purchase and shipment of printing kits

With the money collected we will create kits to be delivered to organizations, hospitals, schools and institutions that we will identify (collaborating with organizations already present in the area) in the most difficult areas in need of 3D printers.

The kit will contain:

 A 3D printer
Reels of PLA (printing material)
Set of spare parts for the printer
 An instruction manual
SD card with preloaded files for printing emergency components (valves, visors, supports...)
Other material for the realization of the components
Emergency medical equipment: surgical masks, gloves, etc.

In this first phase we foresee the creation of a support site (a platform in Beta phase), in which to upload the first explanation videos, tutorials and other print files that will be available for download.

Step 2 - Realization of the exchange and help platform

The second phase involves the implementation of the online file exchange and support network for the realization of 3d components in various parts of the world.

It includes:

Drafting of operating requirements
Drawing up the graphic design
Functionality design
Actual realization of the platform: online environment, related programming work
Test phase

Once ready to work, the platform will provide an interface dedicated to the 3d printers located in the various zones and to the support figures, which will contain different sections:

Learning section, with tutorials, mini-courses on 3D printing, the best materials, the best things to do, etc.
Upload/download files section for printing the components
A virtual community where you can post support requests, requests for special parts or other needs. The community can analyze the problem and provide the necessary file that applicants can use to print what they need.

This project aims to bring together 3D printing and the community of printers, with the aim of creating useful objects, tools and, at the same time, spread a culture of innovation and, above all, help to those who need it.

We would like to thank all those involved and in particular for their support:
