LGBTI Refugees in Dire Standoff
I am Melanie Nathan and direct the African Human Rights Coalition: www.AfricanHRC.org
The Kenyan government has threatened to forcibly remove LGBTQI refugees from a safe shelter to force compliance with an eviction notice.
We are working as an intermediary, attempting a compromise solution to the vacating of the Shelter by deadline June 01!
This is very complicated due to the significant safety issue for the refugees who are traumatized and have already experienced significant violence and injury, to include the rape of a terrified young girl, among them.
They are torn between choosing likely violence, injury and arrests by Kenyan police (precedent for this is clear) or the extremely unsafe homophobic conditions outside of the Shelter in tenancy situations which can lead to assaults and rape (precedent for this is clear.)
We have asked UNHCR to negotiate an extension of time with the Kenyan government.
In the meantime the refugees are starving!
UNHCR is barred from delivering services to the compound and the refugees have to leave to purchase their own food.
We seek emergency funding to enable us to pay for food and its delivery.
PLEASE help!
Any amount over immediate food needs will be used toward ongoing needs, and any amount in excess will be used toward medical bills and humanitarian needs for the many refugees and asylum seekers in enormous need at this time!
Tax deductible donations can be made at www.AfricanHRC.org/donate
