My friend Leanne is amazing. She is generous, talkative, madly in love with her husband James, endlessly compassionate and bakes the best gluten-free brownies ever. Her daughter Esther is a total sweetheart, a gifted ballet dancer, an avid reader and a huge fan of her two dogs, Bailey and Elsa.
Two years ago they moved to the Philippines with a desire to help the poor, and have been involved in emergency aid relief, kids street club programmes, and youth sports programmes.
This month, after many years of very serious symptoms and pain for both Leanne and Esther they traveled to Spain to see a specialist and have been diagnosed with a very rare genetic condition in a critical stage that necessitates immediate surgery to save their lives.
They have EDS, a life threatening connective tissue disorder that affects all tissues, arteries and internal organs making them extremely fragile. It is further suspected they have vascular EDS, the most serious form of this condition.
They both have Atlantoaxial Instability and Craniocervical Instability, which means the top of their spine is unstable and compressing the brain stem.
In addition, Leanne has a Chairi, brain tissue is displaced and slipping down her spinal column causing numbness, dizziness and severe head pain.
Both Leanne and Esther urgently need life saving surgery to fuse their skulls to the top of their spines.
It is critical both of them undergo surgery as soon as possible. Esthers situation is the most advanced the consultant has ever seen in someone so young. Basilar invagination is a massive concern where Esthers spine is compressing her brain stem in the area where the involuntary actions of breathing and heartbeat are controlled. The surgeon says her situation is so critical he will move his full schedule to operate on her the moment funds become available.
For now, they are unable to return home, a flight home would be at the risk of death.
Any amount you can donate towards the cost of their surgery and medical bills would be so gratefully received.
