Monument to Baymens Heritage in Oyster Bay, NY
Donation protected
During the early morning hours of Sunday, May 17, 2020, a lone bayman was working on the windy Long Island Sound, approximately one-mile north-west of Centre Island, NY, when for some unknown reason, he was thrown from his clam boat and lost his life in the cold water. His name was Michael Kennedy.
Shortly after, a group of baymen gathered to raise money to construct a memorial in Michael's memory and honor all the men and women who have risked their lives to harvest shellfish. To date, the Committee has formed a 501(c)(3) non-profit designation to raise the necessary funds to erect and preserve the memorial and convey the history of the local shellfishing industry to the public. The Town of Oyster Bay has approved the erection of the monument at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, New York.
