Restore the Manor
We're raising money to restore the historic Manor Shopping Center neon sign.
This beautiful neon sign has been part of San Leandro's history since 1954.
Standing on the corner of Manor Boulevard and Farnsworth Street in historic San Leandro, the sign illuminated an area called the "Four Corners" and marked the entrance to the unincorporated neighborhood of Washington Manor.
For nearly 70 years, this sign has added to the character and beauty of the Washington Manor neighborhood.
Sadly, strong winds in December 2020 brought the sign down and darkened this classic landmark.
Engineers have determined rebuilding the sign will require replacing the foundation with a new reinforced concrete foundation with steel pillars sunk six foot into the ground. The porcelain light boxes will be rebuilt using modern eco-friendly materials. And the beautiful neon tubes will be fully rebuilt.
The cost to rebuild the sign is $140,000 and the fund raising is being led by The Optimist Club of San Leandro and the City of San Leandro. Together, these groups shared the cost of restoration of the sign in 2013 and together, hope to get this beautiful landmark restored and illuminating the community once again.
