3D Print Face Shields for NHS Workers
Donation protected
Many people will be aware of the huge personal protective equipment (PPE) shortfall in the NHS. One of the ways we can help is to use some of our manufacturing capability to make parts for face shields, and the Royal Shakespeare Company has provided a 3D printer for this purpose.
Currently NHS staff either do not have adequate PPE or are forced to re-use PPE for too long throughout the day when ideally they should dispose of contaminated items. Did you know every Covid patient will require, on average, 10 disposable face shields per day?
I will be printing the coloured plastic components shown, whilst others are cutting the clear face shield or elastic headband. I should be able to initially produce parts for about 50 face shields each week on this printer, scaling up to 100 per week by the end of April. I'll be sending them to the group I'm working with, 3DcrowdUK, for assembly and distribution. The whole process is volunteer led and there is an initial plan for a minimum 80,000 units to be delivered to NHS trusts to cover the shortfall in equipment availability during the unprecedented demand we are currently experiencing. 39,000 units were delivered to the NHS during the Easter weekend alone.
We're in a crisis and we can only do this at scale if lots of people are prepared to contribute to 3D printing costs. Please donate if you feel you can!
Thanks, Chris Pepler
