Franzi Ponzi and the Homo Erectors are thrilled to introduce Lookout!—a 48' tall fire watchtower obliquely disguised as a giant fire extinguisher. Partially funded through Burning Man’s Honoraria Grant, we need your help to bring this gift to playa.
Lookout! is a thought-provoking, interactive platform structure designed to invite both play and reflection. Climb up to the cab and catwalk and use the mounted viewfinders to spot the weird and wonderful sights scattered across playa, choose your next deep-playa art destination, or orient yourself within Black Rock City using our custom Osborne Fire Finder. Inside the tower, explore interactive elements including abandoned lookout tower living quarters or the solitude station, a space to pause, journal, and reflect.
At its core, Lookout! explores the contradictory human urges to celebrate fire and control it. By artistically integrating a fire extinguisher into the silhouette of a fire lookout tower, we create a work that is larger than life: Gigantism writ pop-art, absurdity with a serious undertone. We believe we share a responsibility to remain vigilant about our relationship to landscape, community, and the future; Lookout! evokes that responsibility.
The funds raised here will help us complete construction of the full 48' tall Lookout!, fully develop its interactive elements, and maintain a high level of production value. Additional funding also eases the financial burden on the team, making for happier, healthier builders and a more sustainable process overall.
Your support will also help us transport the piece to and from Burning Man, rent the heavy equipment needed for on-playa installation, and provide for the safety and well-being of our artists and builders. Every contribution helps us create a safe, inspiring, and unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
Receiving the Burning Man Honoraria Grant is an incredible honor, but fully realizing Lookout! requires additional financial support. Projects like this are about much more than assembling wood and metal—website and graphic design, architecture, logistics, camp organization, and technical infrastructure are all part of the builder’s toolkit, as is funding itself.
