The Story Behind Saturday Love
After speaking with other DJs across the nation, both industry staples and those less experienced, it quickly became evident that the impacts of COVID-19 are far greater than a simple health-threat. The more influential and experienced DJs, such as myself, may have a minor disruption in finances, whereas the newer DJs, or those that don’t have regular gigs, may have felt it much more. For some individuals, bringing nightlife entertainment to life may have been their primary source of income. Whether that was DJing, bartending or other roles in the industry, this pandemic has brought their income to a complete halt.
This disruption has been felt across the entertainment industry and it will likely continue beyond the quarantine period, impacting much more than just finances as mental health issues often stem from monetary challenges. In different ways, many people lent a helping hand to lift me up when I was a young DJ and I feel obligated to pay it forward.
Supporting Canadian DJs For A Good Cause
With all of this in mind, I feel that I am obligated to use my platform and existing relationships to support these individuals by raising funds. To achieve this, I am hosting an lnstagram Live event called Saturday Love Saturday May 2nd, where Top DJs from across Canada will donate their time and talents in an effort to raise funds for our nightlife community DJs. The event will consist of 13 DJs, who will play back-to-back 30 minute sets. Utilizing GoFundMe, I will encourage listeners and supporters of the initiative to donate towards the goal of $20,000. I would need the money as soon as possible to help make it easier month mentally and financially for DJ's that need it.
The Saturday Love Mission
Once the event concludes, the amount raised will be disbursed to newer up and coming Djs selected by the hosts of the event. I recently hosted an event on Instagram Live, simply playing music, which generated over 1500 viewers. I am certain this initiative will be a success in achieving our financial goal given the overall support from multiple avenues such as the Toronto social scene, the contributors to my personal success and finally the recognizable Djs that are involved along with the communities that follow them.
The support would mean the world to me as I know how it feels to be a new/upcoming DJ that just quit his part time job because of a new weekly nightclub gig. The new and/upcoming DJ now has no other source of income due to Covid-19. With this initiave, with the help of donations; we can make it an easier month for DJ's nation wide.
