My name is Juan Vaca, and I am Principal at Global Family Elementary School in Oakland. We need your help.
As you know, our current reality has impacted countless lives and caused us to pivot from our normal routines, as our schools are closed. These challenges are hard on all of us, but they are even more difficult for the less privileged members of our community. Those without the social and economic capital to more easily navigate this crisis are suffering.
Global Family is a dual language Title 1 school where many of our families live below the poverty line. To get by in the best of times, many of our families babysit, sell food out of their homes, and clean houses. As you can imagine, this pandemic has left many of our families without work or income.
What’s even worse is that three of our parents have now tested positive for Covid-19. A mother and father in one family and the father of another family have all tested positive. In both cases, the primary source of income is infected and quarantined and one of them has been hospitalized.
These families have reached out for help. One mother is so worried she won’t be able to feed her children that she’s working with a teacher to get food.
As a member of this community for the past four years, I see this pandemic just amplifying all the inequities and challenges that exist in my community. As their principal, I want to support our students and their families, and I need your help.
Our goal is to raise money for our community. The needs are great, but these two families will benefit immensely from any support we provide them. We’ll use half the funds raised to support these families, and the other half to assist other families in desperate need of food, internet access (for distance learning), and other basic necessities. These times are tough and many of our families need your help. Please donate what you can.
