Support the Courts!

From social hang outs, picnic lunches, touch football and training-wheeled bicycles, to kickball, frisbee, and of course, basketball, the courts on Bateman Road (Fiske Field) have served as a hub for social, recreational, and even academic opportunities for the school and community at large.
On a small Island, these experiences are vital to the livelihood of the community, especially for our youth. Given the current condition of the courts and the surrounding area, it’s imperative that we once again come together and respond.
20 years ago, residents and friends of Shelter Island came together in dynamic fashion and raised over $50,000 to renovate these courts.
That was then...This is now:
In Phase 1 of our renovation, the school received a substantial donation($6K) last year that was used to replace the six backboards. Subsequently, over $50K was raised this year to meet the costs of Phases 2 and 3 which include repairing, resurfacing, and sealing the asphalt as well as painting the playing area from the three-point arc to the baseline in the Shelter Island school colors of blue and grey. In addition, three sets of official high school basketball lines will be painted. This work is expected to be completed by the end of July.
Currently, our goal is to raise an additional 30K so we can begin Phases 4 and 5. This entails addressing issues related to the landscaping, water run off,/drainage, fencing and parking lot. We expect this work to be completed by the early Fall.
Once the Support the Courts project is completed, the Shelter Island School District will provide care and follow-up maintenance.
