Support the Kingsway Royals

Dear friends, family, and supporters in Evanston and beyond,

As 2020 comes to a close, I am asking for donations to support my school, Kingsway Preparatory. Kingsway was founded based on a need for quality education for historically underserved children.

Given recent news about the academic performance and lack of preparedness among African-American children in Evanston (and Evanston, sadly, is not unique in this), our mission is more critical than ever. Often we assume that a school's overall performance or its zip code dictates our students' success. The data from district 65 and other high performing schools challenge this assumption. Test scores show significant gaps in achievement along racial lines. A ProPublica database published in 2018 showed that, on average, Black students in district 65 are 4.4 grades behind White students academically

Kingsway provides a classical, personalized educational experience that is based on constant student feedback. Our educational plans are culturally responsive, meaning we meet children where they are; they are encouraged to relate their learning to their cultural context. Our model is based on establishing symbiotic relationships among families, teachers, students, and content. It is based on equity and the belief all children can learn. Furthermore, it is designed with our children's exceptional educational needs in mind.

For years, many discussed bringing a school back to Evanston’s 5th ward. We did just that in 2015, and, for the past five years, we have cultivated learning in the youngest members of our community, focusing on social justice, while fostering a strong academic foundation, spirituality, and a sense of self in each student.

Kingsway has seen a great deal of success among our students. Our desire is to reach even more families. Ultimately, our aim is to make Kingsway a beacon in the community and we are dedicated to providing a disciplined academic environment and establishing a culture where students are allowed to explore and grow in an exciting and engaging learning environment. We have made strides, but we need more support.

With your help, we can fund additional staffing and innovations, such as our outdoor learning initiative. Kingsway has always provided the kind of learning environment where we listen to and allow our students’ interests to guide our lessons. When we decided to reopen in person for the 2020-2021 school year and began utilizing the outdoors as our classroom, we found more opportunities for exploration, questioning, problem-solving, and appreciation of our surroundings. It became a renewal of sorts. The cooler weather has brought with it some restrictions, and we would love to have the means to create the more permanent outdoor learning space we need to continue the students renewed growth and exploration (not just as a response to COVID-19, but for years to come). Please join us in making this a possibility for our students.

At the heart of Kingsway is a desire to give back to our community and to change the trajectory for learners who many discount before they even begin. We call our scholars Royals for a reason—early on, we want them to see the potential within themselves. We want our students to grow up and be change agents—people who will live lives in service of both God and humanity.

Thank you for believing in our vision.

“My daughter has truly blossomed academically while attending Kingsway Preparatory. The care and attention [she] received exceeded my expectations. The teachers were fantastic, and because of them my daughter is doing excellent this year. Kingsway is the perfect gift for your child to obtain a good foundation for their educational future within a safe environment.”
