We are off to Guatemala this spring to build houses!
In the poorest areas of highland Guatemala, improper building materials, a lack of appropriate resources, and unsustainable architecture turn houses to rubble in the blink of an eye. Many indigenous families live in makeshift homes that are constructed of nothing more than cornstalk or cardboard walls with dirt floors. Living in these conditions strips families of dignity and hope, while fueling chronic health problems.
We are excited to announce that Tala will be partnering with, From House to Homes, a nonprofit that works with some of the poorest indigenous Guatemalans to create sustainable homes that are culturally appropriate, and affordable to maintain.
Many families that we will be working with reside in corn stalk shacks that continuously wash away during rainy season without warning. In response, we will build 13 X 19 stucco block homes in hopes that simple elements like a lockable door will provide families with security while a roof will provide families with reliable protection from harsh weather conditions.
Anything you can spare goes a long way in rural Guatemala. And of course, all fiscal donations will go directly to this project.
