THE NEW NORMAL THERAPY FUND
WE ARE DOING A 50 MILE BIKE RIDE FROM LONDON TO BRIGHTON TO FUNDRAISE £3,900 TO PROVIDE 12 WEEKS OF THERAPY FOR 5 BLACK PEOPLE AGED 25-35 WHO HAVE LOST A MOTHER/MOTHER FIGURE.
My mum passed away in 2017 and it’s a loss you never truly ‘get over’. My name is Kei, I am the Director and co-founder of AZ Magazine, a project manager, UX strategist and an all around Bad B. It’s taken me a long way to get here and therapy has played a huge part in doing so.
The hardest part after losing someone is trying to return to normal life, but in reality we have to accept that things will never be “normal” again. All we can do is try to find coping mechanisms and peace, and through therapy, I have been able to find both, which is why I want to extend this care by fundraising to pay for 12 weeks of therapy for other people aged 25-35 who like me, have lost a mother/mother figure. I know several people, including myself, who have lost a parent after the age of 25 and it would have been nice to have something like this as a means of support. Even if it was just the knowledge that someone was thinking of us and our needs.
Nothing will ever be “normal” again but you’ll find a new normal.
How much am I fundraising?
We are aiming to fundraise £3,900 to cover 12 weeks of therapy for 5 people. By donating you are providing an opportunity for someone to access therapy at no cost, to help them to come to terms with the loss of their mother/mother figure and any other issues that may have arisen as a by-product of their loss.
Donation Goals
£65 = 1 therapy session
£260= 1 month of therapy for 1 person
£780 = 1 person will get 12 weeks of therapy
£1,560 = 2 people will get 12 weeks of therapy
£2,340= 3 people will get 12 weeks of therapy
£3,120 = 4 people will get 12 weeks of therapy
£3,900= 5 people will get 12 weeks of therapy
Therapy for me feels like a mental hug, so I’ve started The New Normal Therapy Fund, to provide a mental hug, for 5 Black people aged 25-35 who have lost a mother/mother figure.
What am I doing to fundraise?
To support our fundraiser, I will be doing a 50 mile bike ride from London to Brighton alongside two friends. The ride itself has a lot of importance for me, not only the challenge and the reason we’re doing it, but because Brighton is a place I go to every year to celebrate my mums life. So I couldn’t think of a better place to end the ride than somewhere that means so much to me.
I love fitness, adventure and bike riding, so I wanted to create a challenge for my friends and I that would not only allow you to follow us on our journey through training and the ride itself. But most importantly, be a means to open up necessary and meaningful conversations surrounding grief and bereavement. With the hope that we can change even the way that one person understands the impact on grief for those who are experiencing loss as an adult.
Why have I created the fund?
After my mum passed in 2017, I found it hard to come to terms with her death and didn’t even where to begin. At the time I believed I was my normal self, but the reality is that I wasn’t coping and I didn’t even realise it. No matter how hard I tried I couldn’t shake the feeling I had, I tried to do the things I used to do that made me happy, I tried everything but no matter what, I couldn’t shake it. Then somebody suggested I try to go to at least one therapy session and I haven’t looked back since.
I was able to access therapy because I could afford to pay for it, however there are so many people, even more so after the pandemic, that cannot afford to do so. Which is why I want to create an accessible route of therapy for other people who are going through the same thing I was going through.
Currently, mental health services are already overrun, overworked and oversubscribed. Whilst we understand that the services are not perfect, Young people under 25 have the option of seeking dedicated support from youth specific mental health organisations dedicated to their needs.
However, those of us who are over 25 expected to have it all together. It’s as though the older you get, the less care there is extended to you.
Through donating to this fund, you will be helping Black people who may not have the access or means for therapy, to access the support they need. Each donation, no matter how big or small will go a long way in providing free, accessible and necessary therapy, for Black people aged between 25-35 who have a mother/mother figure. With the hope that through therapy, they will be able to learn to deal with their loss, come to terms with the issues that creep up because of their loss and find ways to cope, manage and understand themselves further, so they are able to live a healthier life without carrying the heavy weight of pain with them.
I was only 27 when my mum passed away, I’m doing this for the 27 year old me who needed to talk to someone. I'm doing this so that those who have felt the same pain that I have, know that they are not alone and that people care.
