Renovation for a Reason- The Starken Family

Meet Mitchell:
Mitchell was born on March 11, 2018, joining his big brother Garrett. The first couple of days at home were filled with joy and excitement as they settled into being a family of 4! Unexpectedly, that joy became a life-changing medical emergency for Mitchell and his family. During a bedtime routine, Mitchell (only 2 days old) struggled to breathe- Dan quickly implemented life-saving measures until medical professionals arrived, they stabilized Mitchell and transported him to Children’s Hospital, where a long journey began to determine Mitchell's ultimate diagnosis. After a rollercoaster of tests, treatments and medical visits, Mitchell was diagnosed with Gould Syndrome in 2021- an ultra-rare genetic, multi-system disorder. As a result of this disorder, Mitchell has been diagnosed with spastic quad cerebral palsy. Their full story can be found at Mitchell's Caring Bridge site here:
Our Meeting:
Fast forward to March 2023 when Dan and Jessie connected with our Custom One Renovation team to discuss the project scope. As our team listened to them share their vision and their story of Mitchell’s journey, we were compelled to not only take on this project but to take on this
family! Ultimately, Dan and Jessie’s goal is to ensure their home is modified to not only accommodate Mitchell’s medical needs long-term but to provide an inclusive home that is safe and allows him to move within in a comfortable and unrestricted manner, and the ability to participate in as many family activities as possible.
The Project:
A major part of this project’s scope is to create a 3-story addition with an elevator. This renovation will provide Mitchell the ability to live more freely within his home, along with general ease of access and comfort. Their current arrangements require that Mitchell be carried up/down stairs, this will soon become a roadblock due to his weight when it comes to home
service care services, along with general safety concerns for both Mitchell and those caring for him. The flooring will be replaced to ensure there are no obstacles with transitions for Mitchell's wheelchair. Within this project renovation, new framing, plumbing, mechanical, HVAC and other systems will be demoed and replaced resulting in additional costs.
Our Ask:
Dan and Jessie not only face the costs of renovating their home but the ongoing medical expenses related to Mitchell's condition. We are asking that you join us in contributing to the costs of this renovation, allowing them to focus their funds towards Mitchell's medical treatments as they continue to navigate the rare symptoms of Gould Syndrome!
