Three Charities Challenge: We (3 brothers from East Lothian) have decided to take on the challenge of a lifetime. We are planning to complete a route mapped out by ourselves throughout the Scottish Highlands. This route will be a minimum of 600km and will include multiple munro's! With all of us being absolute hiking amateurs, this will be completely outside of our comfort zone.
We plan to undertake this challenge in July 2021, leaving us with limited time to train!
Not only will this be an amazing experience but we would like to try and raise money through our efforts for charities close to our hearts. All funds raised will be split evenly between the chosen charities.
Charities: Alzheimer Scotland / Endometriosis UK / Kenya Children's Homes
Ben: In my final year at school I was lucky enough to spend time fundraising for Kenya Children’s Homes before heading out to Kenya to volunteer at two of their projects. Their flagship project, Kenya Children’s Home, and also at Suswa Soila Girls Rescue Centre. I am walking for Kenya Children’s Homes because I have seen what an amazing job they do at educating and caring for the kids in their care.
I was inspired to see just how happy and how ambitious the kids were. I remember at both projects asking what some of the kids wanted to be when they grew up and their responses were always along the lines of: a doctor, a pilot, an architect. This coupled with seeing the kids outside the projects longingly looking in, made me realise how much we take education, among other things, for granted.
Every child deserves an education.

“Kenya Children’s Home has cared for more than 6,000 kids from birth to adulthood since it was established.”
“Suswa Soila Girls Rescue Centre (SUSWA) was established in 2005 in the heart of the Rift Valley, Kenya. The project is a refuge and educational facility for Maasai girls at risk of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early arranged marriage”
Dale: I have chosen to support Alzheimer’s Scotland because it has had a big effect on my family.
We have experienced the effects of Alzheimer’s on both the person suffering and the knock on effect that hits people around them. Not knowing who you are is a scary thought and seeing someone you once knew turning into someone who doesn’t recognise himself or his own family is incredibly cruel.
Your identity is a precious thing, so I would like to do anything I can to help towards tackling this horrible disease.
Glen: I am raising funds for Endometriosis UK. Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women. It is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts to grow in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes, often fusing together with other organs. Endometriosis can affect women of any age. It's a long-term condition that can have a significant impact on your life. Some of the symptoms that are seen in the majority of cases are chronic pain, chronic fatigue and infertility to name a few.
I know first-hand what it is like for someone to have Endometriosis as my fiancé was diagnosed with it in 2018. Louise started getting symptoms in 2009 (aged 15) which gradually became more severe. She was eventually diagnosed through surgery, 9 years later in 2018 (aged 23) . This diagnosis came after years of seeking help from numerous doctors and specialists. On many occasions being misdiagnosed with other conditions like IBS and told by health professionals that it was all in her head. After being treated through her surgery in 2018, she was pain free for around 6 months but the symptoms returned with increasing severity and causes her extreme pain and discomfort on a daily basis.
Endometriosis UK do great work to support those living with this horrible condition. These funds will be put to good use aiding in the support of sufferers, helping fund research into treatments and possibly even a cure in the future.
All donations big and small, are greatly appreciated!
All money raised will be going to the charities. None of this money will be used for our expenses.
