Pregnant Mare Rescue, a cherished Watsonville nonprofit (501c3) EIN 26-0484620 dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating horses who have experienced severe neglect, is in grave danger of closing its doors. 20 years of service goes by in a heartbeat. Pregnant Mare Rescue has been a beacon of hope, saving over 860 horses from abuse and possible slaughter. (Yes, American horses are shipped to Canada and Mexico to be butchered.)
Beyond rescue, Lynn has meticulously built a horse sanctuary that offers residents and visitors unique opportunities for healing and connection through close interaction with these magnificent animals, fostering numerous therapy and educational programs. (Where else can you get hands-on, if not a riding lesson or therapeutic riding sessions?)
We are launching a critical GoFundMe campaign to rally our community's support and prevent this invaluable nonprofit from vanishing. Without immediate financial assistance, Pregnant Mare Rescue, and the hundreds of horses it has yet to save face an uncertain future.
Over time, we have come to understand that rescue and rehoming are not enough. In addition to rescue, PMR now provides permanent sanctuary for horses rescued, who are too injured, hurt, or traumatized to return to the horse industry.
We have also partnered with a local nonprofit, BEYOND Liberty (BL), to “open the gates” of our horse sanctuary and expand our scope to include education, awareness, and community outreach.
Together, we are combining our strengths—PMR’s rescue, sanctuary, and advocacy work with BL’s emphasis on retirement, education, accessibility, nature, and direct human–horse connection.
Through this collaboration, we are creating opportunities for people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds to experience the well-being that arises when horses and humans connect through partnership and consent—where horses are given a voice and choice in their relationships with us.
This shared vision goes beyond rescue and sanctuary for horses; it creates a community-centered space where humans can slow down, reflect, and grow alongside the herd. By inviting the public to engage in programs that promote wellness, education, and advocacy, PMR and BL ensure that horses are not only safe for life and celebrated but also recognized as teachers and partners.
