Hi! I'm Scott Poindexter wildlife advocate, photographer, educator, lover of the natural world especially wildlife and wild places.
My mission is to be a voice for those without one, the most vunerable on our planet, wild animals and wild places. I'm raising money to help promote and make the biggest impact with my current project Walk4WildlifeCrossings my walk across the USA 2020. But I need your help....
DID YOU KNOW?
* 1 MILLION ANIMALS are KILLED DAILY on US roadways! over 300 million/year
* Hundreds of people die and thousands are injured.
*$8 Billion of property damge and countless dollars of human suffering.
My turning point to Walk4WildlifeCrossings came after volunteering to set cameras along I-70 in Colorado the summer of 2019. I've lived in Colorado for many years and seen the dangers to wildlife and humans on the roadways firsthand. Yet, what I learned by volunteering was the true staggering numbers of wild animals lost on the roadways. Also, how greatly beneficial Wildlife Crossings have proven to save animal and human life. It's time for action not just words to make a difference.
My goals are to raise public awareness, promote and encourage people to get involved with organizations that are directly advocating for wildlife crossings in each state and nationally.
And inspire you to connect and protect our natural world.
You may ask what are Wildlife crossings anyway?
Wildlife crossings come in many shapes and sizes, over roads, under roads around roads. It depends on the need in the particular area and "funding availabilty" hence the big need for increased general public awareness. They can be a bridge that looks very similar to a car bridge yet will have grass, trees, shrubs growing on them to make it comfortable for the animals. Check out this short video on a Colorado crossing structure 90% decrease in kill rate. Please also realize it may be the big animals that get all the press yet these crossings are used by ALL creatures from the tiniest like turtles and mice.
Colorado now needs these on I-70! Another example is using an already built bridge and expanding the dimensions underneath. This is what has been done on I-97 in Washington State. The funds are not there yet to do what's really needed based on studies yet they took an old bridge and expanded the underneath and built fencing to guide the animals to use it and it's been a huge success.
Many people have done fantastic work to get wildlife crossings up on certain roadways in the US thank you to all of you. These crossings have shown resounding succes at saving animal and human life.
YET, there is still a lack of awareness amongst the general public and a massive immediate need for many more wildlife animal crossings over and under our roadways throughout the US. We must make a difference by getting more crossings getting built and installed sooner than later.
The funds I'll be raising here will be used to help me and the project get more exposure as well as help with costs of the project itself. It will take me approximately 6 months to walk across the USA.
Not only can you help animals with your donation helping this project be a success but also by signing petitions, calling your representatives and joining a local or national organization that advocate for wildlife crossings. I'll be listing many of these organizations as I go and anytime there are petitions to be signed. Last donating directly to a wildlife crossing project or cause and I'll be bringing those to light as well.
I can't thank you enough for your support and more important to understand wildlife have no way to thank you. What my point here is animals both wild and domestic have no voice have no way to ask for help they're the most vunerable creatures on our planet.
We.... you and I can make a difference and be the their voices!
Sincerely,
Scott W Poindexter
