Walkie-talkies for Sick Kids

Donation protected
Kids battling cancer face loneliness in hospitals and this makes it harder for them to recover. We have a solution for this problem!

We are the Great Gearheads, a First Lego League (FLL) team trying to improve the world. We’ve been working hard to solve this challenging problem and come up with a simple solution to help “chemo kids” interact with each other.Hospital loneliness makes it harder for kids to recover when battling cancer

Our innovative solution is to use walkie-talkies to allow kids in the hospital to talk to each other without coming into contact with harmful germs. This will allow them to recover faster. We’re raising money to bring more walkie-talkies to sick kids.

Kids undergoing chemotherapy cannot socialize with other kids because their immune systems are compromised. They could get sick if they come in contact with germs from other kids. This makes them very lonely. Our research shows that humans are social creatures, and these kids’ mental health affects their physical health, which then affects how fast they can get better.

Great Geaheads partnered with University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital to design and test this innovative solution. The solution can more broadly apply to other kids whose immune systems are compromised, and even other kids who are hospitalized. We have worked with many doctors and other experts around the country to research and improve the solution.

The walkie-talkie solution is simple, cheap, effective, and robust. Anyone can use a walkie-talkie. It’s easy to have a group conversation or switch to a different channel for a one-on-one conversation. If a kid does not feel well enough to talk then they can just listen and still feel connected. We think walkie-talkies are the best solution because there are no log-ins or passwords, and no expensive iPads or data plans. No wifi is needed, and we don’t need hospital IT departments to administer them. Walkie-talkies are nearly indestructible. They are easy to sanitize and it's easy to transfer a walkie-talkie to another kid.

Please donate now! $28 buys two walkie-talkies. $65 buys four walkie-talkies. And for $86, we can buy a six-pack of walkie-talkies!

Please do your part to fight hospital loneliness, and help chemo kids recover!  Donate now!
