WorkingOn WorkingOnUs is a piece conceived by Montreal Choreographer Andrew Tay, created and performed with the Indefinable Folks: a collective of dance artists comprised of Joey Eddy, Kate Nankervis, Robert Kingsbury, Will Ellis & Vanessa Kimmons (not featured in this video). The piece involves sculptures by Francois Lalumiere and Lighting Design by Karine Gauthier.
With an awareness of how queerness relates to performance aesthetics and choreographic processes, WorkingOn WorkingOnUs asks how performers negotiate intimacy, contact and the experience of becoming imagery for choreographers and audiences.
The cast works at manipulating slime, fanning themselves and each other, producing subtle sounds through body contact and using their buttcheeks as apertures for LED lights. They work with these materials in order to explore, in the moment, what agency means within a body-centered performance context.
WorkingOn WorkingOnUs is fundraising for a public performance in Toronto, Canada, as well as exploring options for touring. In the next rehearsal period, the team will work for the first time with switching who plays the role of choreographer, in order to shake up the hierarchical dynamics we are exploring. We need time to rehearse in an intensive way, in order to move forward with this project that deals deeply with embodied consent and public performance.

The funds will be used directly to rent rehearsal space and fund the performing artists, and if we raise enough funds, we will expand the cast to include more performers. The next production will be in 2020/2021 so the sooner we can confirm funding, the more prepared we can be.
