Wythenshawe Good Neighbours

Donation protected
Wythenshawe Good Neighbours  (WGN) is a 2022 'Be Proud Manchester' award-winning community initiative in Wythenshawe. It’s run by a small team (two of us), with support from volunteers - like our Chair and Board and our fantastic drivers, some of whom are pictured here.

I've worked for WGN for over five years (as the Manager from a year ago) and I really enjoy working for and with our members.

I'm not a regular runner, so 10k at the Great Manchester Run is definitely a challenge! I'm determined to give it my all, to raise funds to enable 20 more Wythenshawe Good Neighbours members to receive our newsletters this year, delivered to their door by our drivers.

If you're able to donate, you can be sure that any amount will be gratefully received by our community group - and will have a direct and positive impact on socially-isolated older people in Wythenshawe. Thanks so much!

Our ethos is to promote a positive attitude to ageing, volunteering and contributing to the local community. We aim to inspire, invest in and include older residents, so that they can benefit from the many services, facilities and opportunities that Wythenshawe has to offer them.  We promote positive wellbeing and reduce social isolation in later life by supporting older people (50+) to connect to their community.

We do this through activities such as: a social eating programme in local venues; a regular newsletter (usually delivered to members' doors by our volunteer drivers); special events; trips out; telephone befriending; a practical resilience resource; information/skills-sharing opportunities and signposting to local services, activities and events.

Most of our embers are aged 65+ and many live on their own. Several have long or short-term physical health and/or mobility issues. They face ongoing challenges, such as loss of confidence and chronic loneliness/isolation. Several are carers. However, since the start of the pandemic we are starting to see more younger older people (between 50-64) either being referred or self-referred, and we're starting to look at some activities more suitable to this age group.
