Fund for Flatbush Fire Victims
Don protégé
BROOKLYN, NY: Today, Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (D-Brooklyn), Deputy Leader and Chair of the Council's Housing and Buildings Committee, opened his district office to accept donations for the victims of last week's tragic Flatbush fire. The 2-alarm fire broke out last Wednesday night in an apartment at 1434 Flatbush Avenue above Eglise Baptiste Clarte Celeste Church.
The fire resulted in one fatality, five severe life threatening injuries and ten minor injuries. Seven families are now homeless, staying in temporary shelter provided by the Red Cross and the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development. Last Friday, several families stayed at Council Member Williams' district office and received clothing donations while waiting to go to their hotel.
"I'm deeply saddened by the fire that claimed the life of one member of our community last week and injured many others," said Council Member Williams. "My prayers for peace and comfort are with the family and victims, some of which stayed at my district office on Friday evening waiting for their temporary housing to be worked out. I thank the Fire Department, the Red Cross, local clergy and neighbors for their immediate efforts to assist in this crisis, including providing comfort and temporary shelter. I am now asking for anyone with means to lend a hand as well. These families have lost everything they possess. Let us pull together for our own during their desperate time of need."
A fund has been established by the Haitian-American Community Coalition. Monetary donations can be given here.
Additionally, clothing and non-perishable food items will be accepted at Council Member Williams' district office, located at 4517 Avenue D, Brooklyn, NY 11203.
