Lemy's Corrective Surgery Appeal

Donation protected
Lemaiyian 'Lemy' Saitoti is 8 years old, and was born in Mombasa, Kenya. At birth he was diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy.  Told that he would never talk nor walk, like any parents, Lemy's were determined to do all that they could to help improve their son’s health.

Lemy's parents sought countless additional opinions and resources -- and were fortunate to be provided with aids in his early development, like special shoes to help straighten their son's legs, and a special support jacket to help straighten his back. As a baby, unlike other children, Lemy could not crawl.  Rolling his whole body was the only form of mobility that he could manage.  The support jacket Lemy recieved at 2 years old helped to rectify this condition, however, by age 3, he out grew it. Fortunately this jacket had helped him to stand. He then recieved crutches, which helped him become slightly mobile. But due to body aches, he has always been on painkillers.

Recently in 2013, the consistent support that Lemy had received from his parents came to a halt. His mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer, and the family turned their attention and finances to her, as she battled with cancer. Lemy's mother later passed away.

With such a heavy burden for a young boy to carry, Lemy has remained optimistic that he will one day walk. While in India in 2014 recieving cancer treatment for his mother, the family heard of success stories regarding corrective surgeries for Lemy's condition. They reached out to reliable Orthopedic Surgeons, and were referred to Top Orthopedic Dr.Viral Shah.  Dr. Shah later visited Kenya and personally examined Lemy.

Dr. Viral Shah’s diagnosis:

“Lemayian is a case of developmental dysplasia of hip joints.  So, hip joints are not in the sockets.  The ideal age for corrective surgery is below seven (7) years. This is because after age seven, the femoral head will over grow the acetabulum and reduction in to the sockets becomes very difficult and increases the chances of re-dislocation.  Lemayian will require to under-go a detailed assessment before the line of surgery is finalized which will be determined: if there will reduction the hip joints in to the socket, where each hip joint shall be operated on at different times. In case of the possibility of reduction is not there, then pelvic support osteotomy shall be done to improve his walking and support. This is a bit complex situation and will need to be dealt with carefully and with detailed understanding.’’

Now that Lemy is 8 years old, it is crucial that he undergoes this surgery as soon as possible. Lemy's operation will take place at The Spine Clinic in India, which is one of the Columbia Asia Hospitals in New Delhi, India. The operation will cost $15,000 ($7,500 per hip). The family, whose financial status has been immensely effected by cancer treatment for Lemy's late mother, is asking for help.  They have managed to raise $5,000. If you feel led, please join us in helping precious Lemy.
