Our dad, Rob Bairnes is a single 58 year old father of 5 ( Tyrone, Ryan, Jessy, Jenifer and Theresa.). He is a hardworking, honest, and outgoing man who leaves his mark wherever he goes in the form of laughter . He is an irreplaceable person and a beacon for all his kids.
My dad has been in the hospital since February 12 of this year, and there has been no diagnosis made for the disease, that has left him unable to use his dominant hand or even move it, and his speech has been severely effected, among other symptoms not to be named. Without a diagnosis he cannot be treated. Numerous tests (4 ct scans, 1 pet scan, 2 spinal taps, sinus biopsy etc.) have been filling his schedule, each to no avail and the next step is a brain biopsy, and we are forced to wait a month for this. This has been a life altering ordeal for my dad , siblings and myself that happened quickly and unexpectedly, leaving each of us struggling to adapt.
He has accepted that he can no longer work or do many of the things he loves and enjoys on a day to day basis. But my dad is a proud self made man and I see his sadness every day. We know this disease is degenerative and are unsure of how much more he will lose because of it and we may never get an answer. His stay at the hospital has been difficult and far from restful and comfortable.
He's restless from the other patients, and when he goes to eat breakfast he can't even open his food for himself. After his sinus biopsy, he was in excrutiating pain and discomfort for 4 days because nobody would take the time to understand that he was saying he was in pain, due to the medications and painkillers, but instead assume that they knew what he was saying. And when I showed up he cried in my arms out of relief that someone was there that would listen and sit with him and he didn't have to feel trapped anymore.
Now his speech therapist has sent a student to study and work with him, to see if she recognizes that the disease is causing a unique speech pattern that is constantly changing.
I have been able to take on my fathers everyday responsibilities, other than what he's able to do on his phone. And have been lucky enough to be able to spend time almost every day this last month. But I have to return to full time work soon and will struggle to keep up the pace of what is becoming an exhausting battle. The financial strain caused by this event on my family is relentless and we fear he may lose his house.
Because of a heart attack he suffered 11 years prior he was denied insurance on his home and bills unfortunately don't stop when you become ill. He had lost his job in the economic downturn mid 2015 but was hopefull in January at new prospects for new opportunities in his profession when this tragedy struck.
At this point he had depleted his line of credit, credit cards, rrsp's and was forced to borrow from his mother (90) but cannot rely on her for the expenses he has.
We are and will continue to be strong for my dad, best friend and only parent in his time of need, because he was always there for us. but he is unsure of how he will make it through the next few months financially.
