A Friend to Take to Foster Care

Entering foster care is traumatic and confusing for children. Our goal is providing comfort for the child and resources for foster parents. The program will provide the book, Love Bandit, and a cuddly raccoon to children coming into care. Heart 2 Heart Resources and the Adopt America Network are partnering to make this opportunity available to children entering into foster care in Northwest Ohio.
Every year, over 400 children are removed from dangerous or neglectful home situations and placed into foster care in Lucas County alone. These children may be separated from siblings as they enter an unfamiliar household with new "parents", new "siblings", a new school, and a different set of rules and expectations. It is a very lonely and scary experience. Other than clothing, these children take little of their personal belongings with them. Author, Virginia Ulch and founder of Heart 2 Heart Resources and the Adopt America Network have partnered to offer a measure of comfort by supplying each child entering foster care with a copy of the book Love, Bandit and a cuddly plush raccoon. The book's main character experiences many mishaps and misconceptions on the path to learning to fit in. While the story is written to help the child understand that his or her feelings are normal, the book also includes a list of famous people who were in foster care or adopted, activities and resources for parents, teachers, and counselors. Finally, the book contains a section called My Story where the child can write his or her own. Thanks to the cooperation of many, these books and plush can be supplied for about $10 per child. This project will also support the Adopt America Network by donating 10% of the proceeds to help special needs children find permanent homes. We are also donating 10% of all purchases made from our Heart 2 Heart Facebook store.
