Senior Portraits for Foster Kids
Donation protected
Have you ever met a person that completely opened your eyes to a problem you never even knew existed? I met that person recently. I’d rather not mention her name but she was a foster student who came to my studio for senior portraits. Her foster parents were very upfront about the fact that my studio was more expensive than most in our area but they felt very strongly that their foster child truly deserved to have the full on model experience that we provide our senior portrait clients.
That started me thinking about how many other foster children out there really deserve to have a once in a lifetime senior portrait experience but can’t afford it. These students have been raised in a less than ideal situation that they did not create and have still managed to graduate high school. That deserves to be celebrated in a really big way. So my studio intends to pull out all the stops with each student to give them an experience that they will remember for a lifetime. This is the best way I know to say congratulations to each student and hopefully encourage others to follow in their footsteps and continue down their path to graduation.
Now all of that is a fantastic reason to donate to our cause but I have to admit that I do have an ulterior motive that I’d like to share with you. As a photographer (especially a photographer that works with children) you get a chance to positively affect the way that child sees themselves for the rest of their lives. This is not an exaggeration. We have literally seen our students cry because of how beautiful they are in the pictures we take. When they leave our studio they stand a little taller, smile a little more, and you can almost see the self confidence in their eyes. To show another person the beauty that the world sees in them and to help them find beauty in themselves is an incredibly powerful thing. Funding this project gives us the opportunity to do that for 10 young adults each year.
So now that you you know why everyone here at Troutman Photography is so eager to see this project succeed, let’s talk about the details.

Great care and thought was put into creating the print package we wanted to offer the students. We chose the products to include in this session based on the lifestyle of a 18 year old and based on the uncertain nature of the life of a foster child. We felt that including large wall sized portraits wouldn’t really be relevant so we tried to included items that were substantial in quality but had a smaller footprint. This will make the products more likely to survive the packing/moving process and help the students keep track of the items until it was time to hand them down to their children.
We are asking for a donation of $400 per student for 10 students. All additional donations and leftover funds will be used to continue this project into the following school year(s) with a max of 10 students per year.
All Foster Students will be selected by:
C.A.S.A.
Court Appointed Special Advocates of Linn County
and
D.H.S.
