Nantucket Funeral Home 501C3 filing
Donation protected
The island of Nantucket has been without a local funeral home since January of 2014 when the Lewis Funeral Home closed its doors. The funeral home had been in continuous family-run operation since 1878. When the Lewis family no longer had anyone able to carry the business forward, they regretfully had to retire. Our community owes the Lewis family a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.
Nantucket Island Aftercare, Inc., a non-profit corporation registered in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and with the MA Attorney General, was formed for the purpose of building a community funeral home for the residents of the town of Nantucket.
At their annual town meeting beginning on April 6, 2015, the voters will choose a piece of town-owned land upon which to site the funeral home. A generous local builder has pledged to build the funeral home for cost. It is estimated that it will be around $1.5 million dollars to build and equip the facility. We know that this "...BY us, FOR us..." effort will be done $5 and $10 at a time. We are hoping that every citizen will be emotionally invested, and will support the effort to accomplish this much-needed facility and essential service as soon as possible.
In order that contributions may be tax-deductible, it is necessary to file for 501c3 status with the IRS. We are hoping that people will help us to raise the $1100 that will cost in a very short time. As soon as the 501c3 status is achieved, any subsequent donations we receive will be deductible for the donors.
Our tentative timeline, once the leases are in place, the funding is successful, and the facility is built, is to be operating by Summer of 2016.
