George Munro was the first president of Jonesville and the first county clerk in Hillsdale County. He was the Brigadiere General of the Munro Guard during the American Civil War era. His home on Maumee Street in Jonesville is the oldest house in Hillsdale County (1834). He is buried at the cemetary in Jonesville in the SE corner on top of a hill.

After over 130 years, the obelisk marking his grave has fallen off of its pedestal. Natural movement of the Earth, along with storms and falling trees has created an uneven base that caused the obelisk to fall to the ground where it lies on its side. The marble structure is too heavy to safely move without using the appropriate equipment. Proper respect needs to be made to restore honor to this pillar of the community.

I am not related to the Munro family, but I live in their house, and recognize the importance of this early pioneer to local history. His family is long gone, so I have taken the responsibility to hire a monument company to pour a new cement foundation, level the pedestal, and return the obelisk to its proper upright position.

The cost is $296. Any assistance from local residents or long lost Munro family members is appreciated.
