The Mattie Williams Neighborhood Family Center in Safety Harbor is a non-profit that serves the basic critical needs of the less fortunate in our community.

Among other things, the Center provides:
 - Local food pantry
 - "Clothing Closet" (gives clothes to the needy, not a thrift store)
 - Will help pay a portion of someone's electric  or water bill (once per year) to avoid shut-off in service, especially for families with children
 - After-school and summer programs for children, including an academic skills program so that they can change their future (for instance, computer skills)
 - Free Internet access and job training
 - Much more

The Center is a non-profit and the majority of their funding is from local governments or government agencies such as the Pinellas County Juvenile Welfare Board, as well as private donations. Funding is always unpredictable and a constant concern for the Center.

In order to pass a balanced budget, the City of Safety Harbor had to cut funding to the Center by $15,000 for the current fiscal year.  It was difficult decision, and one not made on the merits of the work that the Center does, but simply to meet a balanced City budget.

This online funding campaign is about helping bridge the dollars that the City had to cut back on. The Mayor referred to this Center as a jewel in our community. Let's all open up to support their ongoing great works, in support of our own neighbors in Safety Harbor.

***For every $1 donated online via this campaign through Thanksgiving 2014, I will match dollar-for-dollar, up to $2,000. So if the $2,000 donation goal is hit, I will donate an additional $2,000, for total funds raised of $4,000.

In addition to cash donations, please feel free to drop off any food or clothing donations to the Center at 1003 Dr. MLK Jr. Street North, Safety Harbor, FL 34695.  I also encourage people to stop by the Center to see it for yourself (you probably drive by it frequently).

Here is a great story about its' namesake:  http://www.tampabay.com/news/humaninterest/heart-and-soul-of-safety-harbors-mattie-williams-neighborhood-family/1243506
