SBC Library NEW Bookmobile Fund

For the past 11 years the Shelbyville-Bedford County Library has been serving the Daycare Children of Bedford County through our Bookmobile Service. We were 1 of only 3 Bookmobiles still in use in the state, until fire stopped us in our tracks on July 23, 2015.

As our Bookmobile Crew headed back into town on 231 North the check engine light came on. They immediately stopped and called the library Director, Rita Allen, who then called the tow truck and sent someone to pick them up. During the time it took the tow truck to get there smoke began coming from under the hood, the crew called 911 and then called Rita back to tell her that it was in flames.

Thankfully noone was hurt in the fire, but sadly the 29 year old bookmobile was completely destroyed. This means that the children in Bedford County will no longer have the opportunity to come out on the bookmobile and choose their own books every other week as they have done for the past decade. For many children this is their first experience with the library and for some it's the only experience they have with the library. They have lost a friend, the bookmobile is dear to these daycares in a day when they are no longer able to physically bring their kids to the library for programs and to check out books.

We will continue to serve these kids and will be taking boxes of books to them beginning in September, but it's not the same. These children love being able to come on the bookmobile and choose their own books.

We are asking for your help. If everyone would just give a little bit we will be able to purchase a new bookmobile and serve Bedford County even better than before! Please, think about your first experience with books and libraries and then make the choice to help us keep the smiles on these children's faces for years to come and to instill the love of reading to our community!
