Help Support our Community Garden

The mission of the St. David Street Community Garden is to strengthen our community and foster self-sufficiency, good health, and interaction among the people of Tarboro by providing education and gardening space for food production and sustainable gardening practices.

In 2011, some of the members of the Community Garden helped to initiate Plant a Row for TCO.

Edgecombe County is one of the poorest counties in the state of North Carolina, and it is hard to find organic, local produce.  Many citizens who can afford to do so, travel out of town to buy quality organic produce, but the majority of our citizens are below the poverty level and don't have that luxury.  Edgecombe County is off the charts with mortality from chronic diseases like hypertension and type II diabetes, and has one of highest rates of breast cancer in the country.  Saint David Street Community Garden would like to help everyone who lives here have affordable access to fresh organic food, and one of the ways we do that is by providing space, support, and assistance to anyone who wants to try their hand at organic vegetable gardening.

Many people are physically unable to tend a traditional row garden, and still others are just intimidated or just don't have the time to do so.   Vegetable gardening doesn't have to be a full time job.  Some members of the Garden have some experience with square foot gardening, raised bed gardening, lasagna and no-dig gardening, and other methods of small-scale gardening that require less maintenance and work than what is required of an in-ground row garden, while yielding larger harvests per square foot of gardening space.   The Community Garden would be able to help more citizens grow their own food if the garden could be converted to raised beds.

We would like to build raised beds in a section of the garden for gardeners who find it hard to till, weed, and maintain a traditional row garden.  I have some experience with square foot gardening at my home, and I think that using the SFG method in  the community garden would make it more accessible and manageable for those who are intimidated or unable to manage a traditional in-ground garden.   The lumber, soil and compost needed to build several 4x8 raised beds will be a substantial initial investment.

We, the gardeners, appreciate your support!  Your donation will help to bring affordable organic vegetables to the citizens of Tarboro and Edgecombe County, which would improve their health and quality of life!
