My name is Sarah Turo-Shields, graduating senior at Perry Meridian High School. I have a heart for service. What I will be doing for others is embarking on a gap year/mission trip to Arua, Uganda with Sherry Meyer, a Comboni missionary.
Arua is 7,484 miles from Indianapolis. The cost of my trip is approximately the distance I will travel. I will be contributing $2000 of money I've earned at my job . . . the money I raise will cover my roundtrip flight, housing and living expenses for food and supplies for 10 months, in addition to medical costs for immunizations as well as for my passport and visa.
I depart on August 27, 2017 and I plan to serve until May 2018. While in Uganda, I will volunteer at the Media Center of Radio Pacis, in the medical clinic and/or in the schools in the Arua Diocese.
From a young age, I was described as having a “St. Francis heart.” My first service opportunity was when I was in early elementary school with Lucious Newsome. Lucious started the Lord's Pantry and was a self-proclaimed “beggar for the Lord.” He was such an inspiration to me, my church community as well as the entire Indianapolis community, He was the embodiment of the Beatitudes, and he deeply imprinted in me a desire to serve.
It is with that heart of service that I humbly beg for your support . . . I strive to live out my faith and look forward to the opportunity to do so in Uganda.
