Support Girls in Nature's Scholarship Fund

Donation protected
Locally, young girls are beginning to be exposed to nature, but they are suffering from illnesses that prevent them from enjoying all of nature. Specifically, in Oakland, many Black kids suffer from asthma. At Brookfield Elementary in Oakland, 98% of the Black kids have asthma and 51% are in special needs classes. Environmental racism, redlining, misdiagnosis from doctors and poor infrastructure are reasons why Black kids are disproportionately affected by asthma.

Statistics like these are why my program is important. I want to take girls outside and help better their quality of life. Nationally, there are organizations that are attempting to mobilize young Black girls and women to exercise, explore and be in nature more. Access, awareness, social support, and more are barriers to nature for many people.

Girls in Nature is a summer program aimed at providing an enriching experience for minority, adolescent girls in nature. My goal is to create an environment where girls of color feel comfortable in nature. I want them to know they have access to this space as well and they can use this space to heal from the world. There is community amongst other women like you and you can write, draw, talk, photograph about it if you want.

Girls in Nature will hike with Karen Daly, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland eco-therapist, at an East Bay Regional park.

Also, they will plant trees with Kemba Shakur from Urban Releaf and set goals.

Essence Magazine reported that "The new “Deeper in Debt: Women and Student Loans” study shows that Black women have by far the most outstanding student debt after college graduation compared with both white men and white women."

In addition to experiencing the outdoors, rising juniors and seniors of the program have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded to rising junior and seniors who attended 80% or more of the summer program. I am asking for $5,000 to be able to provide girls with scholarships for their post high school plans.

If you would like to donate journals, pens, water bottles, or anything else that would be useful for the girls, please email Amaka Agodi, founder and director, at [email redacted] or check out our website at girlsinature.com.

By the grace of God, Urban Releaf is my fiscal sponsor for the program and I received a grant from California Releaf. I am applying to grants to cover the remaining costs of the program.
